It is with great excitement that we have officially begun the first term of our seventh academic year.

University of the People is on its way to changing the world. To date we have enrolled students from 170 countries. We have proudly registered 4,000 volunteers to help the University grow, surpassed 1.1 million supporters on Facebook, and been covered in over 1,500 media outlets. In addition, last month my TED Talk surpassed 2,000,000 views!

There is nothing more in tune with our mission than beginning the new academic year by opening our gates to accessible higher education even wider. Last week we announced the launch of a new scholarship especially for Syrian refugees to study at UoPeople. We have received a great response from interested applicants so far. We hope to get support for 500 refugees and even more. The first major donation has been received and the university is seeking immediate further funding to accommodate the need. We appreciate all the support we receive for this worthy cause. For more information regarding supporting refugees, please contact [email protected]
To read more about our first Syrian refugee, see below.

I want to wish all our students, staff, faculty, volunteers, supporters and friends, a successful and productive academic new year. Thank you for changing the world with us.

P.S. If you would like to receive a copy of UoPeople’s 2015 Annual Report, and you have not yet requested one, please contact us.

Best regards,

Spotlight on a Syrian Refugee student: "UoPeople President encouraged me to seek higher education”

Omar A. A UoPeople Student Studying toward a B.S. in Computer Science

"After three months of studying at Yarmouk University in Damascus, Syria, my life was turned upside down and my family and I were forced to flee in 2012, leaving everything I knew behind.

Unlike most of my countrymen, I was fortunate to find work with a nongovernmental organization, with an income to support my family, but if I want a better position or career, I have to have a degree. When I found UoPeople, I knew it would change my life. I felt like I was the very person the university was created for, with its belief in the right of education and its belief in people just like me.

UoPeople allows me to fulfill my dreams, with the added advantage that I can study for my degree conveniently alongside work and family demands. Moreover, it is an accredited American university, so wherever my future takes me, my degree will be internationally recognized. I feel like I’m a global citizen, thanks to UoPeople, and I am proud to be part of this community of open hearts and minds."
